How to Tell if Your Yard Needs Better Drainage

Many drainage problems develop gradually, making them easy to overlook until the symptoms become obvious. Persistent wet areas, water pooling after rain, or muddy ground that never seems to dry are common indicators that drainage on a property needs improvement.

In the Fraser Valley, regular rainfall and clay-heavy soil can make poor drainage conditions more noticeable, especially in yards that were not graded properly.

Standing Water After Rain

Water that remains on the surface long after rainfall usually indicates that the ground cannot drain efficiently. Low spots in the yard often collect water and may require grading adjustments to redirect the flow.

Soggy or Soft Ground

Lawns that remain soft or muddy days after rain may be holding excess moisture beneath the surface. This often occurs when the soil becomes compacted or when water has no clear path to drain away.

Water Moving Toward Structures

If water flows toward a house, shed, or garage during rainfall, the grading around the structure may need correction. Proper slope should guide water away from buildings to prevent moisture problems.

These types of problems are often addressed through drainage solutions that redirect water safely across the property.

Erosion or Washed-Out Areas

Visible erosion, exposed soil, or washed-out sections of landscaping can also indicate drainage problems. These issues occur when water flows repeatedly across the same areas without proper control.
